Sunglasses Size Guide
Sunglasses sizing can feel confusing, but once you know what the numbers mean, it's easy to find a frame that fits perfectly. Here's everything you need to know.
Reading the Size Numbers
You'll typically find three numbers printed on the inside of the temple arm, like 54-18-145. Here's what they mean:
- Lens Width (54mm): The horizontal width of one lens in millimeters. This is the most important measurement for fit.
- Bridge Width (18mm): The distance between the two lenses, spanning the nose. A wider bridge accommodates a wider nose.
- Temple Length (145mm): The length of the arm from the hinge to the tip that hooks behind your ear.
Finding Your Fit by Face Width
| Face Size | Lens Width | Bridge Width |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 48–52mm | 14–17mm |
| Medium | 52–55mm | 17–19mm |
| Large | 55–58mm+ | 19–22mm |
How to Measure Your Face Width
Use a soft tape measure or a ruler. Measure from one temple (just outside the eyebrow) to the other. This gives you your face width:
- Under 5.5 inches (140mm): Small frames
- 5.5–6 inches (140–152mm): Medium frames
- Over 6 inches (152mm+): Large frames
Frame Shape & Face Shape
- Oval face: Most frame shapes work — you're lucky. Try classic wayfarers or aviators.
- Round face: Angular frames (square, rectangular) add definition. Avoid round frames.
- Square face: Round or oval frames soften strong jawlines. Aviators are a classic choice.
- Heart face: Frames that are wider at the bottom — aviators, cat-eye — balance a broader forehead.
- Oblong face: Larger, deeper frames (oversized, shield) fill out a longer face.
